In the talk, I will explain the general philosophy of deriving a pointwise estimate of an exponential sum defined over the integers. The key part is to connect the pointwise estimate to a mean value estimate effectively. I will also give an introduction to the decoupling theory, which is a powerful tool for giving mean value estimates of exponential sums.
